An Australian Under 16 and Under 18 national basketballer, Lamb chose to concentrate on football, and was in the AIS/AFL Academy squad in both 1997 and 1998. He also made the TAC Cup Team of the Year and was an Under 18 All-Australian in 1998.

Picked by Melbourne with selection #13 in the 1998 National Draft, Recruiting Manager Craig Cameron said he rated "Lamb in the top five players in the draft". He played two games in his first season, but didn't appear in the seniors at all during 2000. Despite being drafted as a defender he spent time as a key-position forward for Sandringham that season.

Back into the side for Round 1, 2001, Lamb was back in defence but played just three games for the season. He didn't return until Round 12, 2002, replacing knee injury victim Alistair Nicholson. Lamb performed admirably and won the Most Improved Player award. He had an injury scare when an attempt spoil ended in a headfirst collision with the ground. Despite fears of a serious neck injury he escaped with a minor concussion. He played both finals in 2002, but was on the outs again in 2003, playing just three games. In his first appearance, he conceded one goal at the hands of Matthew Lloyd in the Round 2 match before being benched for the final three quarters.

Both Lamb and coach Neale Daniher denied a rift, but the coach said that he had been disappointed in the way Lloyd had led Lamb up the field. He said, "Lamby did very well for us last year but it was time to broaden his game. He got turned around a little bit by Lloyd, who took him up the ground, away from the area where he had become comfortable. "So I told him that he had to lose some weight, improve his endurance and mobility, and learn to play further afield." His last match saw him beaten comfortably in the first quarter by Ian Perrie, after which Daniher benched him. He wasn't called on again, despite Melbourne having one of the least experienced backlines in the competition.

Lamb remained on the list in 2004 but did not play a senior match and was delisted at the end of the season. After a year out of the game, he rejoined Sandringham and played in a VFL Premiership in 2006. He retired after the 2008 season, having played 137 games for the Zebras.

Lamb's brother Andrew was drafted by St Kilda in 1995, but did not play a senior match.
