Played 11 games for WAFL side Claremont in 2015, but returned to Halls Creek after being overlooked in that year's draft. In 2017 he signed with Howlong but left during pre-season, moving to Adelaide to play with Scotch College Old Collegians. In 2018 he joined SANFL side Sturt, and ended the year pursued by Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood and Gold Coast. Carlton was able to list him as a mature rookie as a draft concession, before they immediately traded him to the Crows.

McAdam debuted for the Crows in 2020, kicking 72 goals in 50 games over four seasons. After only playing seven games in 2023 he requested a trade to Melbourne at the end of the season. He missed the start of the season with injuries, not debuting until Round 10, then only playing three games for one goal before returning to the VFL.

His half-brother Ash Johnson played for Collingwood, and was cousin to Sam Petrevski-Seton (Carlton)) and West Coast, Jy Farrar Gold Coast, Toby Bedford (Melbourne) and Greater Western Sydney, Krstel Petrevski (Melbourne) and West Coast, and (Irving Mosquito) Essendon. McAdam's uncles Gilbert and Adrian also played in the AFL.
