The AFL's 18th team first competed in the TAC Cup underage competition in 2010. In 2011, they made their senior debut in the pre-season NAB Cup before playing out the season in the North Eastern Australian Football League.

Before their entry to the competition in 2012, Greater Western Sydney sparked a media frenzy when media outlets reported they were set to sign former number one draft pick Tom Scully. After conjecture throughout the 2010 season about his playing future Scully eventually opted to accept a multi-million dollar offer to play for the Giants.

James McDonald joined GWS as a Melbourne-based player mentor in February 2011, and after spending a season playing in the Victorian Amateur competition announced that he would be making a comeback to play with the Giants in 2012. He became the first ex-Demon to appear with the new side.

Ex-Irish import Nicholas Walsh was the Giants' first High Performance Manager in their first AFL season, while former Football Operations Manager Richard Griffiths was named their second CEO.

In Round 4, 2013 Melbourne registered their highest score in a fourth quarter in club history against the Giants, to overturn a 19 point deficit.

Melbourne's first loss to GWS, in their first ever match at the Sydney Showgrounds, proved to be the Giants' only victory for 2013 and in Round 21, 2014 GWS registered their largest ever win to that point and first victory at the MCG with a 64 point win.
