Brisbane's #9 selection in the 2005 National Draft was selected highly despite having suffered Meningococcal Disease shortly before draft day. He was a slow starter with the Lions, playing 22 games across his first three seasons before a breakout 2009 campaign where he was thrown into the Lions first ruck due to a spate of injuries, earned eight Brownlow Medal votes, and was a contender for All Australian honours.
Sent forward in 2011 he won the Lions goalkicking with 27 but requested a trade at the end of the year citing a desire to return to Perth. He initially seemed set to go to Fremantle until Melbourne launched an attempt to snare him midway through trade week and outbid the Dockers. Despite Clark initially refusing the offer, and Fremantle putting out a press release saying he had all but agreed to join them, Melbourne upped their offer and convinced Clark to join the Demons instead.
The deal was ultimately completed with Melbourne giving up selection #12 in the 2011 National Draft with a view to playing Clark as the key position forward they were lacking. Skeptics questioned the size of the deal, but Clark repaid the Demons' faith by providing their only regular target up forward.
He had just passed his record goal tally for a season in the Round 13 match against Greater Western Sydney when subbed off after a collision with the knee of teammate James Magner. It was later revealed that he had suffered a Lisfranc fracture foot injury which would keep him out for the season. He returned for the opening match of 2013, but soon suffered another injury to his foot and was put on the sidelines again.
After initially being listed as being out for two months he did not play another game again that season, and suffered another disruption in the 2014 when he hurt his hamstring.
In March it was revealed that the club had given him extended leave for personal issues and that he had returned home to Western Australia. On 8 April 2014 he announced his immediate retirement while battling clinical depression.
He returned to football with Geelong in 2015. In a three-team trade the Demons received Heritier Lumumba from Collingwood. After eight games in his first year and one in his second he was delisted.
