The first visit of the Giants to the MCG, and their first match against the Demons, was overshadowed by the return of Tom Scully who had controversially ditched Melbourne for a multi-million dollar offer at the end of 2011. Former skipper James McDonald also played against his old side for the first time but received a much warmer reception than his teammate.

With Scully booed on every touch and a number of banners in the crowd targeting him he helped the Giants get off to a quick start, and they had the first two goals before Clark (four goals) and Rivers (two) combined to put Melbourne back in front at quarter time.

From there Melbourne's nerves settled, and even after losing Clark when he suffered a heavy knock from teammate James Magner, Melbourne were not troubled again. In the third quarter they piled on 7.4 to nothing, the first time they had held a side scoreless in any quarter since Round 8 2006.

Starting the last quarter 78 points in front they were wasteful kicking for goal and allowed the Giants to kick the first two goals before recovering to draw the quarter and take home a comfortable victory.

Nathan Jones was fined twice, $1800 for instigating a melee and $1200 for being involved in it while Mark Jamar, Brent Moloney and Daniel Nicholson were all fined $1200 for their participation.

Best were Watts, Rivers and McDonald. Sam Blease replaced the injured Clark at half time. It was later revealed that he had suffered a foot injury which would keep him out for the season.
