The Demons started slight favourites as they unveiled their equal most amount of club debutants since Round 1, 1966, but were humiliated by a Port Adelaide side who were faster and better drilled all day.
Port had two goals on the board before Melbourne had even registered a field kick, and despite two goals from the returning Mitch Clark which put the Demons back in range late in the quarter they couldn't get near Port again.
Melbourne fell apart in the third quarter, kicking just one behind, and they only managed a single goal in the entire second half as Port ran away to their second biggest ever win against the Demons.
Best were Viney, Grimes and Matt Jones. Mitch Clark injured his ankle and was replaced by Sam Blease. Colin Sylvia was reprimanded for striking Justin Westhoff during the fourth quarter.
