A doctor by trade, Duffy served in with distinction in the Middle East, Syria and New Guinea during World War II.

He took up a role as Melbourne club doctor in 1951 where he served until 1962 and was made a committee member for the 1960 season. He also served as the club's Medical Officer before being replacing Bert Chadwick as club president in 1963, and was in charge for one last premiership before the club went into decline.

Duffy played a key role in the controversial sacking of Norm Smith in 1965. He served as president until the end of 1974 after which he retired and was replaced by John Mitchell.
