Started his career at Richmond with four goals on debut in 1951, and booted 21 from six appearances. The next two years saw him with limited opportunities, even after winning the 1952 Seconds goalkicking, and midway through 1953 he transferred to the Demons, in exchange for the unplayed Frank Dunin.
Schofield had played for the Tigers in Round 9 but made the swap midweek and debut for Melbourne in Round 10. He kicked 14 goals in six games, including five in a Round 12 draw with his old side but didn't play another game after Round 15.
After playing as a rover in the 1954 pre-season he was omitted from Melbourne's list and turned back a role with Corowa to join VFA side Moorabbin. In his first VFA season, Schofield kicked 94 goals - including 22 in one game against Sandringham.
In 1955 Schofield trained in the pre-season with Collingwood and played practice matches but failed to win a clearance, and despite training with Carlton and North Melbourne in the 1956 pre-season had to wait until 1957 before moving back into the VFL with North. Schofield played four seasons there including a losing preliminary final in 1958. In 1959 he topped North's goalkicking with 47.
Schofield rejoined Moorabbin again in 1961, and captain/coached Queensland side Labrador to a premiership in 1970. He is a Life Member of St Bedes/Mentone FC.
