After their first win in nine weeks, Melbourne came up against a side aiming for the double chance. Melbourne started well, kicking two of the first three goals, and adding another at the end of the quarter to lead by five points. They continued to attack at the start of the second term, but Footscray's defence proved too strong. It kept them to just one goal across the middle quarters while the home side finished them off with nine. Several quick goals in the third quarter gave them an 35 point lead at the last change, and Melbourne only offered token resistance from there.
Best were Spencer, Williams and Arnold. Case replaced Beckwith and Gloury replaced Bull, both in the last quarter.
