Image Going into the game at 1-8, Melbourne's season was over, but they had put in a string of credible performances in losing to finals contenders so were expected to gain some pride by easily beating fellow cellar dwellars Hawthorn. The visitors had other ideas, and took a step towards avoiding the wooden spoon when they cut the game to ribbons in the first term with eight goals to one.

The speed and clever use of handball of the Hawks players bewildered unenthusiastic Melbourne players, and the match was over almost before it had begun. Melbourne struck back in the second term, led by Mike Woods, Peter Marquis and Stuart Spencer but by then it was almost too late.

After the initial blast the Demons settled down to the task of reeling in Hawthorn's big lead. During the last quarter they managed to get back within a goal before the Hawks were shocked back into action and kicked four goals to put the match away once and for all. The loss left the Demons just 2.1% off the bottom of the ladder.

Best were Spencer, Marquis and Beckwith. 19th and 20th men Reeves and Gleeson replaced Lane and Christie respectively during the last quarter.
