Best and fairest player in the 2006 National Championships second division playing for Queensland. Named an All-Australian but missed testing at draft camp due to injury.

Showed promise in his rookie season, but suffered life threatening injuries against Carlton in Round 14, 2007. He collapsed during the game, and medical staff were forced to insert a needle into his chest to release the pressure around his heart and lung. It was determined that a burst cyst had caused the problem - a pre-existing, unidentified problem.

Returned the next year and was injured again, missing every game after Round 1 until the last match of the season.

Reborn as a forward in 2009, Petterd led the club goalkicking for much of the year. In round 2, 2010 he suffered a cruel ending to the game when after kicking four goals and being amongst the Dees best he spilt a mark in the goalsquare with seconds left for a certain goal that would have won the game.

After suffering a shoulder injury in the round 5 match against Brisbane, Petterd injured it again in the round 6 loss against North Melbourne and was forced to undergo season ending surgery. His wretched run with injuries meant that in his first four years in the AFL he managed just 9, 2, 18 and 6 games.

Despite speculation that he would return to Queensland to play with the new
Gold Coast team Petterd signed an extended contract to stay at Melbourne.

He started the season as Melbourne's first ever Substitute in the Round 1 match against Sydney but was dropped after the second match of the year. After starring at Casey Demons he returned in Round 7 and kicked four goals in the big win over Adelaide.

Dropped again after Round 10 he returned to the team two weeks later and played seven of eight games before a quadricep injury in Round 22 ended his season. Petterd was involved in a controvery with West Coast's Patrick McGinnity during the Round 21 match when McGinnity made a number of unsavoury comments about Petterd's mother. The Eagle was suspended for a week.

A disappointing 2012 campaign saw Petterd out of the senior side and with the Casey Demons for most of the season before an achilles injury ended his season before Round 20.

He was delisted at the end of the year, but was then selected by Richmond in the 2012 Rookie Draft, where he played 12 games for the season - including his first final. He added a further 17 games in 2014 and once again played in the finals.

Petterd retired at the end of the 2015 season after an injury interrupted year. Joined VFL club Coburg as an assistant coach in 2016
