Initially rejected by North Melbourne, the Roys signed 'Salty' Parish in 1980 and got 87 games out of him as a tough ruck-rover and utility before he switched to the Demons halfway through 1985. The deal also saw Demons Kelly O'Donnell join the Lions.

Parish played out the rest of the season before his career ended. He returned to Yarrawonga and won their best and fairest award in 1986 and 1987 - having previously won it three times between 1977 and 1979 before joining Fitzroy.

In 1990 he coached a Riverina representative side.

Parish passed away from cancer in 1998 aged 42.
