Danny Hughes, who had been brave all day, had the chance to put the Demons back in front but his hurried snap landed in the arms of Rodney Eade who delivered the ball to Steve Malaxos to finish the game off with a goal.
They should never have been that close in the first place. The Hawks were woefully inaccurate, and the chief offender was Michael Byrne who kicked 0.8 and two out of bounds for the Hawks against his old side. Double the scoring shots should have led to a fearful massacre, but somehow Melbourne got into a position to take the points.
Best were Adrian Battiston, Gerard Healy and Les Parish on his debut after crossing from Fitzroy.
