A two time Scotch 1st XVIII premiership player in 1929 and 1930, Foster went to the bush after his school years finished but was recruited to the VFL in 1935 after kicking eight goals in the first quarter of the Gippsland League Grand Final in 1934. Melbourne had first approached him in June 1933 but his father had insisted he stay on the farm.

Foster was wanted by many league clubs and clearance was initially opposed by Richmond at the VFL Permit Committee. The Tigers claimed to have already signed him before he decided to train with Melbourne. He testified that he had originally been approached by Melbourne two years earlier, and by Richmond the previous year but he had accepted Melbourne's offer because they'd had arranged the wool classing job he wanted. The committee accepted his story and cleared him to play for Melbourne.

The half-forward was a regular in his first two seasons, before only playing four games in 1937. In his first outing of 1938 he suffered torn ligaments in his leg which ended his season and ultimately his VFL career.

In 1949 he was at Nambrok.

His son Rob Foster played 22 games for Melbourne between 1964 and 1967.
