Image After returning to finals in 1928, Melbourne again narrowly missed out. With two games to play they held a game and a half lead over sixth place St Kilda, but a loss to them in Round 17, and a loss against the unbeaten Collingwood in the final round kept them out.

10 nominations were received for seven committee vacancies - Gordon Coulter, George Haines, RB Hogg, Fred Ince, Charlie Lilley, Harry Parkin, GH Watson, W. Watson, JA Henty-Wilson, FH Mendoza. Haines, Hogg and W. Watson were challenging incumbents. Win Berry and Gordon Sleight were reelected unopposed to represent football club members.

In May the Theatrical Employees' Union called upon unionists to boycott games at the MCG on the charge that the ground's management wasn't observing terms of the award covering ticket sellers.

At the end of the year the committee instructed its delegates to the VFL to vote against the further expansion of the competition and a 22 round season. The club lost over a thousand pounds for the season, with income of £3041, and expenses of £4094.

One of the fathers of the club, Henry Harrison passed away on September 2nd. The VFL named their recently purchased headquarters after him.
