Gillespie-Jones played an amateur during his career, and in danger of losing his 'blue' at Melbourne University, had to appeal to the University Sports Union council to play league football. He played the first two games of the season but suffered a knee injury and was forced to miss the rest of the year.

He then returned to Old Melburnians in 1936 before being cleared to Fitzroy where he was sparingly used for the next decade. At various times during his time with the Roys he flirted with a return to the amateurs, and a move to Carlton. He had already been linked to the Blues before 1934.

He and teammate Allan La Fontaine spent up to three months before the 1936 season sailing to and from the United States on a tanker. He said one of the reasons behind the trip was the hope that regular work would help cure his leg issues, but upon returning Gillespie-Jones did not play another senior match for Melbourne.

After missing the entire 1936 season he returned for the 1937 pre-season, but instead joined Fitzroy. He had far better luck with injuries there and played as a half-back flank for six years. In 1946 he captained their Seconds side, playing 49 matches for them in total. The next year he was honorary coach of all University sides.

After his football career ended the practising Barrister also worked as a football writer for The Argus. In 1950 he suffered a rare eye disease which threatened his sight.
