After missing out in 1935 the Demons snuck into the finals on percentage for the first time since Checker Hughes and Percy Page had crossed from Richmond and Hughes had rebadged the Redlegs as "The Demons". To go with the name he installed a large 'demonical' head in the training rooms, complete with a red feather protruding from its cap.

With Percy Beames was vice-captain, and Les Jones deputy vice-captain they won through the semi final before coming unstuck against the Swans in the Prelim Final.

There was an unexpected break in the season on Saturday July 4 when torrential rain caused all of the Round 10 matches to be pushed back a week. The season ran a week longer as a result.

On Tuesday 21 July a combined Melbourne-St Kilda team played against the visiting East Perth. Melbourne players involved were Ball, Lock, Kelly, Feltscheer, Barassi, Baggott, Furniss, Roberts, Foster and Reiffel.

After five straight Seconds premierships the Redlegs lost the Grand Final.

During the year Melbourne sponsored the Prahran City club in the League Sub-District competition. Before the season a Second 18 played them in a practice game. The club were the driving force in an attempt to abolish the district recruiting scheme, there were only five junior clubs in the district due to a lack of suitable grounds.

The club had receipts of 2727 pounds, and expenses of 4026 pounds.
