Having won the Morrish Medal for best player in the Under 19s, Healy debuted in the seniors two years after brother Gerald. He was a narrow second in the 1984 Best First Year Player award, but rapidly became a fixture in the side.
At the end of 1985, Healy's brother had taken the big money on offer in Sydney and moved to the Swans. Greg had offers to join his brother, and
a significant financial offer to join Carlton in 1987 but decided to stay. Healy went on to win the Best and Fairest and sign a two year contract extension at the end of 1986.
Made a vice-captain for 1987, "Sugar" Healy was promoted to captain after the retirement Robert Flower at the end of that year. He was just 22-years-old, but steered his side to the Grand Final in his first year.
Healy struggled for form in early 1989, but recovered to be picked to play for Victoria. A pre-season achilles injury kept him to 13 games in 1990 and Healy gave up the captaincy to Garry Lyon at the end of that year. A serious knee injury suffered in Round 3, 1991 destroyed his season after three games and by the time he returned in 1992 he'd lost pace. After playing the first nine games of 1993, Healy was dropped to the Reserves. He played in their premiership side but was delisted at the end of the year, despite signing a two year contract at the end of 1992.
In 1997 Healy was an MFC director, serving until resigning in September 1999.
In recent years, he has been employed as the CEO of the Australian arm of surfwear manufacturer Quiksilver. He returned to the club as Football Director in 2012 and resigned from his post in October 2013.
A third Healy brother, Matthew played Under 19's in 1987.
