Melbourne's first ever night game at the MCG saw the Demons trying to make it two in a row to start the season after their round 1 victory over Fitzroy. On the other hand North had been humiliated by the first game Brisbane Bears the previous week
It was not to be Melbourne's night, despite leading at half-time. Peter Moore was a late withdrawal because of a calf injury, Brian Wilson suffered a badly cut cheek after being knocked out in the third quarter and Greg Healy was reported for striking. Robert Flower broke his finger and Alan Johnson injured his groin. Healy was later found not guilty.
The Demons conceded five goals to one in the first quarter. That put North in the driver's seat and they were never headed again.
John Northey wasn’t reaching for injuries, suggesting his team had believed the publicity after their opening victory and saying “we had to learn the hard way that one win does not make a season”.
Best were Stretch, Bailey and Flower.
