In Darrel Baldock's last game as Saints coach, his side avoided being thrown headlong into wooden spoon calculations when a seven goal opening quarter set them up for when the rains come in the second term. Against a side who had lost ten games in a row the Demons found defeat in what seemed like an easy victory to confirm their place in the finals.

Nicky Winmar tormented three opponents, Rod Grinter, Steven Stretch and Steven Febey, en route to nine goals in an upset win for the Saints. At the other end Darren Bennett was blanketed by champion full-back Danny Frawley.

Baldock ended his coaching career with controversial comments directed at the Demons. He said "We were a better bloody side than Melbourne. I don't think they're a good side and I never have. We should be in their position", despite his side sitting 11th after the victory. Saints board members apologised to Melbourne the next week.
