Number: 32 (1989 Reserves)

From: Carey Grammar/Old Carey/Melbourne, Selection #27, 1989 Pre-Season Draft

A former member of a Hawthorn junior squad Tomkins had already won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1986 and decided to try his hand at football after the Australian eights had finished a disappointing fifth in the 1988 Soul Olympics.

He was picked by the Demons in the next pre-season draft, and played Reserves but was dropped midway through the year and returned to rowing. He found more fame there as a member of the gold medal winning Oarsome Foursome squad.

Notes
Draft records show Tomkins being drafted from 'Melbourne', but it's more likely that he was unattached to any team at draft time and had been training at Melbourne.
