Any suggestion that the struggling Kangaroos might spring a Saturday night surprise at the MCG were dismissed by the time they were five goals behind in the opening minutes. By quarter time they were seven goals down, one player down after a serious injury, and staring down the barrel of a massive loss. A further five goals to one in the second quarter left Melbourne 72 points ahead at half time. They slowed in the third term, before surging again in the last quarter. At one stage the margin reached 108 points before three late North goals grabbed some dignity back, reducing the margin to double digits.

Best were Petracca, Chandler and Fritsch. James Harmes replaced Michael Hibberd in the fourth quarter.
