Drafted as a wingman/forward with Melbourne's first selection in the 2020 Draft, Bowey was given a senior opportunity as a defender in late 2022 after impressing in the VFL, He came into the side just as they were heading towards a first minor premiership since 1964.

In his third game, Bowey was nominated for the Rising Star award, and he held his spot through Melbourne's finals campaign, winning a premiership in his seventh game without playing in a loss. He was also in the side for the first 10 wins of the 2022 season, giving him the second best winning start to a career in VFL/AFL football. He fell out of favour late in the year, dropped after Round 17, playing one more game as an injury replacement, and missing the finals.

Bowey's father Brett played 85 games for St Kilda between 1988 and 1994, and his sister Hannah was on the North Melbourne AFLW list in the 2022 spring season.
