A winless first month of the season left Melbourne in danger of dropping out of the finals race, but consecutive wins against Adelaide and Richmond offered some hope of a revival under Neil Balme. His side's run came to an end in a thriller against a Lions side who were already accustomed to close finishes, winning one game and losing three by a goal or less.

The Lions kicked the first two goals of the game, while David Neitz missed from close range, then converted from 55 metres out. Melbourne led by quarter time, and extended the margin to five goals at half time. They benefited from a Fitzroy blunder where a free kick 15 metres from goal was sent back to a player 50 metres out, who then turned it over and allowed Matthew Febey to set up a Garry Lyon goal. It was a different game after half time, with the Lions kicking all five goals in the third quarter to take a one point lead. They extended their margin with the first two goals of the last term, and held on thanks to Paul Roos gathering 14 of his 30 possessions on David Schwarz at centre half-back. Rod Grinter goalled at the 20 minute mark to cut the lead to two, but with the ball in their forward line for most of the last few minutes Melbourne only scored one more behind and Fitzroy held on to win by the narrowest margin.

Neil Balme said: "After half-time Fitzroy was a lot harder and a lot tighter and really didn't give us any space at all. It was a game that both had to win and it was a game we planned on winning and perhaps believe we should have won".

Best were Stynes, Tingay and Obst. Lyon had a corked thigh.
