Originally home to Carlton, Fitzroy and Hawthorn also had stints at the ground. In the 1990s and early 2000s it was used for low-drawing games involving other Victorian teams.
During the early 1900s the ground was known as Princes Oval.
In 2004 chairman Paul Gardner suggested that the ground may become the permanent training base for the club, but nothing came of the plan.
Melbourne was the last club to win a premiership match at the venue, in Round 9, 2005.
The AFLW competition used the ground as its premium Victorian venue from 2017.
