After winning Richmond's Under 19s Best and Fairest in 1982, Pickering graduated to the senior side, where he won the senior equivalent in 1988. He served as the Tigers' vice-captain until the end of 1991, and intended to stay at the club until Richmond's search for a ruckman led to them swapping him as part of a deal for Steve O'Dwyer.

Playing as a ruck-rover after spending most of his Richmond career on a wing or half-forward flank, Pickering was one of Melbourne's best in his first season, before stress fractures ended his campaign after Round 12. He only played four more games in 1993 before being delisted. After his playing career ended, Pickering returned to the Tigers where he served as Reserves coach in 1998 and 1999 as well as a stint as an assistant coach with the Western Jets. He coached the Fitzroy Under 17 side to a juniors premiership in 2007 and in 2012 was appointed their senior coach where he remained through 2015.

His brother Justin also played senior football for the Tigers and younger brother Andrew appeared for their Under 19s.
