After winning Richmond's Under 19s Best and Fairest in 1982, Pickering graduated to the senior side, where he won the senior equivalent in 1988. He served as the Tigers' vice-captain until the end of 1991, when Richmond's desire to find a ruckman led to them letting him join Melbourne as part of a deal for Steve O'Dwyer.
Pickering played two seasons at Melbourne before being delisted. His brother Justin also played senior football for the Tigers and younger brother Andrew appeared for their Under 19s.
After his playing career ended, Pickering returned to the Tigers where he served as Reserves coach in 1998 and 1999 as well as a stint as an assistant coach with the Western Jets. He coached the Fitzroy Under 17 side to a juniors premiership in 2007 and in 2012 was appointed their senior coach where he remained through 2015.
