After winning the 1982 Tigers Under 19 Best and Fairest award Pickering graduated to the senior side where he won the senior equivalent in 1988

Served as vice-captain of Richmond until falling out of favour after the 1991 season after which he was was traded to the Demons where he played two seasons before being delisted.

His brother Justin also played senior football for the Tigers and younger brother Andrew appeared for their Under 19's.

After his playing career ended Pickering returned to the Tigers where he served as Reserves coach in 1998 and 1999 as well as a stint as an assistant coach with the Western Jets. He coached the Fitzroy Under 17 side to a juniors premiership in 2007 and in 2012 was appointed their senior coach where he remained through 2015.
