After an upset first win of the season a week earlier), the Demons met former coach John Northey for the first time five days later and won in a landslide. The game was played on the same night as an Adelaide vs Hawthorn match, the first time two premiership games had been played under lights on the same night.
Despite the short break, Melbourne were full of run and took control with four unanswered goals in five minutes of the first quarter. Two late goals to Richmond cut the gap to 11, but a seven goal to two second term left the Demons in control.
The margin was still 99 points at the 30 minute mark of the last quarter before a Richmond goal removed the possibility of a 100 point defeat.
Best were G. Lovett, Schwarz and Neitz. Greg Healy had a jarred knee. Former Demon John Howat was reported for striking Garry Lyon with an elbow to the head in the second quarter.
