Melbourne went into the match as lukewarm favourites but saluted easily on the back of a dominant aerial display by Denis Cordner. Matching the visitors in every aspect of the game the Demons put away a disappointing Collingwood outfit without getting into second gear. On a heavy ground Melbourne's big men literally crashed their way to victory, overpowering and out-jumping their opponents all day. Due to the condition of the ground the umpire bounced the ball on an alternative circle near the outer wing.

Conditions should have suited the Magpies small men, but coming off a strong victory the week before they failed to reproduce the same form and were dispatched with ease. Collingwood briefly had the lead in the first quarter, but Melbourne hit back to lead by 16 at the first change. The Pies again challenged early in the second but were wasteful with their passing and focused too much on finding Twomey at full forward.

The visitors extended their lead to over six goals at the last change, and after conceding the opening goal of the last quarter held firm to extend the margin and win easily.

Cordner was Melbourne's best. Not only dominating up front with six goals but also cutting the Magpie big men to ribbons when he was in the ruck. Noel McMahen was also amongst the best while McGrath, Rodda and Arnold won praise in the backline.

McGivern and Carlon were 19th and 20th men.
