Melbourne's team was still heavily affected by the war, but in comparison to 1942 when they had been thrashed on a weekly basis at the start of the season the Demons were far better. South also had several regulars missing, but started well and quickly had the first goal. The Demons were forced to defend, and counter-attacked for the second goal. By the end of the first quarter each team had three goals and South were narrowly ahead.

At the start of the second quarter Melbourne were the better team, but kicked three behinds in a row to open the term. A late goal to Smith and a string of behinds gave the visitors a narrow lead. South bounced back in the third, and had a two goal lead late in the quarter before another Smith strike cut the gap to a goal.

Two quick goals with the wind in the last gave Melbourne the lead, before they kicked away to a 20 point lead. Their first win of the season seemed certain, before South put on a run. The Demons steadied and held on for a comfortable win.

Don and Ted Cordner were best, along with Smith. 19th man Hewson was unused.
