The son of former South Melbourne player Alf, Dowsing gave the game away for five years after school before returning in 1937. He played in the B-Grade amateurs and was recruited to Melbourne after kicking 100 goals for the season (on top of 150 the year before), signed after a week where he'd booted nine goals in a game and was highlighted for his performances in the media. He kicked the first goal of the game on debut.

Dowsing returned the next year, playing 11 games. He was runner-up in the 1945 Best and Fairest, Dowsing remained on the playing list in 1947 but officially retired midway through the year and was appointed metropolitan recruiting organiser.

Later served as assistant secretary in 1951
