The son of former South Melbourne player Alf, Dowsing was recruited from the B-Grade amateurs in the week of his debut. He had kicked nine goals for South Camberwell in his last game before joining Melbourne. After school he'd given the game away for five years before returning to the sport in 1937.

He was runner-up in the 1945 Best and Fairest, Dowsing remained on the playing list in 1947 but officially retired midway through the year and was appointed metropolitan recruiting organiser.

Later served as assistant secretary in 1951
