May 1894 Match vs Geelong

Thursday 24 May - Corio Oval

Geelong 1.0, 1.2, 2.4, 4.6
Melbourne 0.4, 1.4, 4.5, 6.8

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: McClelland 2, McCarthy 2, Christy 1, Roche 1

Melbourne had lost two of three matches to start the season, and they travelled to Geelong facing the prospect of their year being ended a month in if they couldn't get a victory.

In the last 10 minutes, with their side heading for defeat, Geelong threw all the men onto the ball in a last ditch attempt to muscle through the goals that would at least get them a share of the points. Despite the savage play that the tactic caused it didn't help them score.

Until then the match had been a high quality one, with the two sides locked together for most of the first half. Geelong scored the first major but Melbourne equalised in the second term to send the teams into half time level.

Best were O'Dea, McCarthy and Sholl.
