Cut by the Swans after just one game, Deans went on to become a premiership back pocket player for the Demons. He came to the club as a rover before being moved into defence.
One of the most durable players of his era, Deans played 135 consecutive games between 1943 and 1950.
In Round 13, 1948 he was knocked out cold in a game and had his nose rearranged across his face - his teammate, the doctor Don Cordner straightened it out on the spot.
In 1951 Deans was cleared to become playing coach of Northcote. He remained there until end 1952, then coached Daylesford until the end of 1953 and Reservoir in 1954. In 1971 he was a member of Melbourne's recruiting staff - remaining in the job until the mid 80s.
