Having made a finals appearance a near certainty with six wins in a row mid-season, the Reds suffered their second straight loss against one of their premiership rivals.

Despite having struggled to field a team for the game Carlton played faster football on dead turf and opened up a 16 point lead at the first break and never surrendered the lead again. They added just four points on top of their half time margin, failing to press home the advantage by allowing Melbourne some respectability in the final term. The marked difference between the two sides was that Carlton took their chances while Melbourne's forwards were ineffective. This led them to winning easily on the scoreboard when the match was more even in general play.

Until deep into the last quarter Allan was the only goalkicker with three, but the dangerous Brereton and Park were both well held. Gibb and Bill McKenzie were amongst the few winners on the wings. Melbourne was the better side in the last quarter, but it was no surprise that they eventually got on top as Carlton had lost another player before half time and were forced to play short-handed.

Lilley and Bryant were also amongst the best. Despite the loss Melbourne were still three wins in front of fifth placed South Melbourne.
