In terrible wet, rainy conditions Melbourne were the mudlarks as they snapped their three match losing streak with a shock win against the out of form Magpies.

The conditions didn't just affect the football, with Flanagan ill and Coy unable to play due to injury the clock ticked towards the first bounce without Streeter, Wilson or Farrow at the ground. Juniors were informed that they would be playing to cover the three missing men but just before the game they turned up, having been delayed while catching a tram to the ground.

The two sides scrambled through the match, with the visitors coming out on top thanks to the Pies kicking badly and being let down by their forwards. Melbourne learnt quicker than their opponents that it was folly to try and pick the ball up off the muddy ground, while Collingwood still tried to play their natural game to no avail.

With a breeze in their favour most of the third quarter was spent with the ball camped in Magpie territory but they were unable to capitalise and even conceded a goal when the ball went down the other end.

Chadwick, Bruce and Ogilvie were best in Melbourne's first win over the Magpies since 1912.
