The Roys had destroyed their own season by losing the first three games but went into their late season match against the faltering Demons as the form team after winning four in a row.

Melbourne had secured a finals berth win their win over Footscray a week earlier and just fell short in an absorbing battle at Brunswick Street.

The defence of the Roys held firm, allowing the midfield to get on top and their forwards to kick a winning score. The Demons won in the ruck but when the ball hit the deck it was all the home side, and despite a brave rearguard action from the Melbourne defenders Fitzroy were allowed too many shots and made enough of them count.

The visitors rallied late, and Mueller when kicked his fourth goal late in the game to get his side back within a goal they were a chance of snatching victory but couldn't get their nose in front and Fitzroy took the four points.

Arnold, McMahen and Don Cordner were Melbourne's best.

Jack Mueller and Billy Deans were reported for striking and cleared. Mueller was cleared when umpire Harry Beitzel had to admit that he might have been trying to punch the ball clear when he struck Vic Chanter in the face. Beitzel saved Deans after a boundary umpire had provided evidence that he'd struck Fitzroy's George Coates in the face with his forearm.
