Having gone from contenders for second place and a double chance to being just four points inside the finals after two losses the Demons went into their match against Footscray as favourites but almost came unstuck.

For the second week in a row it was Jack Mueller who was their spearhead. This week though he had ample support from Bob McKenzie and between them they booted 11 of 15 goals to get the Demons over the line.

The Bulldogs had their chances to win in the last few minutes but lacked the composure to kick the goals which would sneak them in front. Despite their issues they still racked up the largest score against Melbourne all year.

Lance Arnold was Melbourne's best until he was forced to leave the game through injury. Mueller and McKenzie were also in the best. 19th and 20th men were Thomson and Bedford.

With the final positions on the ladder all but sealed with a fortnight to play it became apparent that Melbourne would have to face off against Geelong again after losing to them in Round 15.
