Signed from SANFL side Glenelg after one season, McGowan lined up in a winning Preliminary Final team in his fourth game. He was suspended for attempted striking and missed both the 1948 Grand Final and the replay.

After being dumped by the Demons at the end of 1950, McGowan won a clearance to Collingwood in [|May 1951] and played one game for the Magpies. He transferred to Ballarat in 1952.

McGowan coached Frankston in 1954.
