Two more ex-University players made their debuts with the Fuschias, but after storming home to a shock win in Round 1 they were beaten comfortably after failing in the final term.

In a low standard game characterised by fumbling and mistakes, Melbourne led at half time and after briefly looking like they were going to run away with the game were just 10 points behind at the last change.

Then the Maroons kicked 6.5 to 1.0 in the final term to claim the four points. Despite their good kicking for goal Melbourne were thrashed by one of the favourites to win the premiership.

Freake kicked eight for the winners.

Hendrie was Melbourne's best, along with Allen and Incigneri. Lilley injured both his hands.
