After 199 games with Footscray, Royal moved to the country to coach Leongatha after his AFL career ended. He then returned to the Bulldogs as their reserves coach for 1996.

He then joined the Demons as an assistant coach for the 2000 season. At various times he was linked with, or applied for, senior coaching roles at Geelong, Richmond, Fremantle and St Kilda but was not successful.

In 2004 he joined North Melbourne before crossing to Richmond in 2005 where he acted as an Assistant Coach/Director of Coaching until the end of 2009 when he joined St Kilda as a development coach.

Royal rejoined the Demons as an assistant coach in November 2010, looking after the defenders before becoming midfield coach at the end of 2011. He was not offered a new contract at the end of 2013 and took over as coach of the Victorian Metro Under 18 side for 2014.
