Collingwood win by 60 points
Henry Coles (also with Collingwood)
Another week, another thrashing for the hapless Demons who were only being kept off the bottom of the ladder by a Fitzroy side who were no better at winning but far more adept at not being thrashed every week.
Conceding just four goals in the opening term must have seemed like a rare treat after the 11 they had suffered at the hands of the Swans in the last term a week before, but by adding just one themselves the Demons were already on the back foot in front of a crowd not befitting a clash between the two ex-superpowers.
After quarter time Melbourne's intensity completely dropped off and it became a case of how far Collingwood. They duly ran away for an easy victory which plunged the Demons even further into an unexpected wooden spoon battle.
42 scoring shots to 17 meant the Pies should have won by even more, and coach Tom Hafey registered his disappointment after the match in suggesting they should have won by at least 15 goals.
Demon coach Dennis Jones was summoned before the league after the match to explain comments he made about Henry Coles not getting a fair run from the umpires. Coles was suspended for one week for using abusive language.
Best were Wells, Fitzsimmons and Byrne. Thorne hurt his knee and Whitford his shoulder.
