The son of a Richmond player of the same name Roberts graduated from the Essendon Under 19s to their seniors where he debuted in 1970. After two seasons in and out of the side he played 21 games in 1972 before suffering a serious knee injury in 1973. He remained at Windy Hill until 1977, spending his last year in the Reserves before negotiating a release to Melbourne early in the 1978 season. He chose the Demons over Port Melbourne, Collingwood and South Melbourne who were also interested. Essendon had already rejected a swap off from South for Roberts.

Rejecting a cash offer the Bombers demanded a player in return, but the Demons believed that they were owed a favor after winger Gary Parkes - who was meant to be a part of the Allan Davis trade - joined Richmond instead of the Demons.

After one game in 1979 Roberts became coach of East Launceston, before joining Lavington as coach in 1980. He won a premiership there before leaving at the end of 1984 to captain-coach Kedron, then assistant coach Western Suburbs in the QAFL.
