The rover didn't take up football until his family moved from Bacchus Marsh to Fairfield in the early 1920s, but when he did he quickly impressed Collingwood scouts and was invited to join the Pies in 1925

After playing 15 games in his first season Libbis missed the Grand Final loss to Geelong. The next year he was first choice rover and played in the Grand Final loss to Melbourne.

From there he went on to win four straight flags from 1927-1930 and was best on ground in the 1929 triumph. Early in the 1933 season he had a dispute with Collingwood over match payments and was forced to leave for Melbourne.

He had represented Victoria seven times while at Collingwood, and repeated the feat in his first year with the Redlegs. After his time at Melbourne ended Libbis coached State Savings Bank in the amateurs in 1938, then joined Northcote in the VFA and played there through 1941. He joined their committee in 1944.
