After two seasons where he was lightly used, and only managed five goals in 11 games, Johnston was sold to Geelong after kicking 31 goals in 1978. None of his goals came in the last five weeks of the season. Melbourne used the proceeds to buy Robert, Glenn and Bruce Elliott.

He played a further 97 games for Geelong between 1979 and 1986. Across his career he is one of only a handful of players to play 100 games in both the VFL seniors and Reserves.

Moved to Queensland in 1987 to play with Southport, representing the state side that year and being linked with a mid-season move to the Brisbane Bears.

In 2006 Johnston coached Upwey-Tecoma and was named to the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

His brother Robert signed with Geelong in 1981 but didn’t play seniors.
