Debuted as a 17-year-old after impressing during the 1973 pre-season, and was then in and out of the side over seven seasons. His most productive year was 1978 where he played 17 games as a half-forward and received his only Brownlow Medal vote.

Fitzsimmons finished sixth in that year's best and fairest, but after beginning the 1979 season with the Demons he was told his services were no longer required. He trained with St Kilda, and they were keen to sign him but couldn’t afford Melbourne’s $20,000 demands. Fitzsimmons instead moved to WAFL side West Perth. He played 92 games until 1983 and won their best and fairest in 1980.

At Albury from 1985 to 1986, then joined ACT side Manuka Weston in 1987 after training with Collingwood. Coached Shepparton in 1997 and 1998.
