Debuted at Prahran in 1974 and led his club's goalkicking with 55 goals. He then moved to Melbourne in 1975 and topped the Reserves goalkicking, but returned to Prahran after four senior games.
Smith was Prahran's leading goalkicker every year from 1976 to 1982, with 610 goals in 136 games. He played in Prahran's 1978 VFA premiership, and was joint leading goalkicker in the competition in 1979.
Died in 2009 after a long battle with lung cancer.
