Debuted at Prahran in 1974 and topped the Two Blues goalkicking with 55 goals. He then moved to Melbourne in 1975 but could only managed four games before returning to the VFA despite topping the Reserves goalkicking with 61 for the year.
He was leading goalkicker for Prahran every year from 1976 to 1982 and booted 610 in 136 career games. He played in the 1978 Premiership side, and was joint winner of the 1979 leading goalkickers award.
Smith died in 2009, aged 57, after a long battle with lung cancer.
