Drafted as a defender after two senior seasons in the SANFL, Pike played exclusively at centre half-back in his first year. A spate of injuries to his forwards forced Neale Balme to recast Pike as a forward in 1994 where he played three finals and showed promise. Off-field incidents related to alcohol soured the end of his season, and Melbourne traded him to Fitzroy.

Pike played all 22 games for the Roys in their disasterous 1996 season and won their last ever Best and Fairest award but wasn't selected as one of the eight Lions players to transfer to the new Brisbane side. Many believed this was to do with his poor professional reputation, but North Melbourne took a chance and picked him up for the 1997 season.

Pike had a solid year in a North side which finished third and was picked for the South Australian state of origin side for the first time. In 1998 he played in a grand final, and in 1999 he landed a premiership.

After a poor 2000 season punctuated with more discipline issues he was once again cut loose, and was this time thrown a lifeline by Leigh Matthews and the Brisbane Lions - who had said no to him just a few seasons before.

Pike became a reformed character in Brisbane and went on to play in their premiership hat-trick, a remarkable achievement considering his first two clubs suffered two of the longest premiership droughts in the league.

In 2006 and 2007 Pike coached Hastings of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. In 2009 he became an assistant coach at the Northern Bullants VFL side and was senior coach of the Power House club in 2010.
