Originally linked to the Demons in a swap for Ray Biffin before the 1974 season, Coles remained at Collingwood. He was eventually cleared to the Demons in June 1975 after 44 games for the Magpies over five and a half seasons, becoming the first player to cross from another side in the middle of a season since John Kerr in 1958.
A fiery character, the rover caused controversy in his 100th game when he was suspended for a week after twice verbally abusing umpire Bill Deller over disputed free kicks. The incident came just nine days after Coles made his debut for Victoria against the ACT.
After being a regular in his first three seasons Coles played just four games in 1979 and seven in 1980, a year when he had issues with a persistent knee injury that meant he had to start the year in the Reserves. Once he made it to the seniors he was fined $600 and suspended for a week after being involved in a locker room punch-up with captain-coach Carl Ditterich. His future at the club was already in question, a few weeks earlier he'd been approached by VFA side Dandenong to join them for the rest of the year but he decided to stick with Melbourne.
Coles remained on the list in 1981 but did not play senior football.
