The ruckman won a Tasmanian Best & Fairest and premiership playing for Sandy Bay in 1963 and 1964 respectively, and played more than 150 games for them as well as representing his state at the 1966 interstate carnival.
After first training with the Demons in August 1966, Whitton made the senior list in 1967 but couldn't cement a spot in the senior side and played just eight games over two years. His first season was wrecked by a four week suspension, followed by a broken finger at training.
In June 1968, aged just 26, he was appointed playing-coach of Ulverstone in the North-West Tasmanian league.
In 1990 Whitton returned to Sandy Bay to coach. He took over the side halfway through the seasons when the incumbent coach was sacked and took his side to the finals before resigning and withdrawing from football.
Whitton's brother signed with Carlton in 1968 but didn't play a senior game.
