A contested election was held at the start of the year, with nine candidates running for five positions. The candidates were WM Cattlin, CE Couchman, Vin Coutie, AJ Neville, Bernie Nolan, Amos Norcott, Harry Parkin, Colonel WB Pleasants and Wally Sykes. Norcott, Parkin, Sykes and Pleasants were unsuccessful.

Andrew Manzie joined as Secretary from Richmond and bought players Len Incigneri and Mick Maguire with him.

Stewards were appointed by the VFL to patrol the sidelines and report any offences that they detected. The system was abolished in 1916.

The numbering of players was introduced for the first time to assist spectators in identifying players, and for umpires and stewards to more easily report players. The Football Record was introduced from the start of the season to help fans identify players.

Season tickets for non-MCC members were introduced for the first time, at a cost of 5/- and approximately 400 were sold. The club was known informally as "the hot socks" due to the red stockings that they wore.

The club organised a trip to Tasmania at the end of June between the gap for Round 11 and Round 12 while an interstate match was being played. Manzie arranged for a local comedian to keep his party entertained by offering a free trip. Unfortunately the plan foundered when his opening performance coincided with the audience suffered a collective bout of sea sickness. Once everyone got their sea legs, there was a notable occurance - the theme song It's A Grand Old Flag was sung for the first time.

When Melbourne returned to the field in Round 12 they failed to kick a goal against South Melbourne, and despite a shock win over Geelong the next week, two successive losses by under a goal shattered their hopes of qualifying for the semi finals for the first time since 1902.
