Sholl first tried to join Melbourne in 1893 but North Melbourne refused him a clearance after three seasons of service. He crossed the following year, playing until the VFL was formed, then for six seasons afterwards. He initially retired with a leg injury before the 1897 season but returned to the side midway through the year.
